Continual increases in population were driven by oil discovery in 1901, in addition to the flourishing port and railroad indu The Woodlands were dedicated by George P. Mitchell in 1974, and overseen by The Woodlands Corporation, branch of Mitchell Energy & Development. Mitchell is an oil businessman who wanted to establish a conference center, hotels, office parks, retail malls, schools, large distribution centers, and golf courses, with houses ranging from affordable to expensive and huge. The land upon which The Woodlands sits was previously occupied by the Grogan-Cochran Lumber Mill.
