First Time Coming to Deer Park, Texas – Did You Know?

YESTERDAY

In 1892, the farmer, retired legislator, and much-traveled adventurer from Illinois, Simeon Henry West, named the town Deer Park for the many deer roaming the Gulf plains. In 1893 a railroad station and a post office were opened. The community had a population of forty by 1896, with a hotel, a general store, and three carpenters, but eventually dwindled down by 1922. It was the Shell Oil Company’s new refinery in 1928 that revived the area, with Deer Park’s many refineries and toluene plants for the production of TNT really establishing the area by 1946.

TODAY

Deer Park a city that is part of the Houston–Sugar Land–Baytown metropolitan area, located in Harris County, situated in Southeast Texas. Deer Park has around 9,000 homes and more than 30,000 residents. As of the 2010 U.S. Census, the population was 32,010.

An ethylene explosion occurred on June 22, 1997, at local Shell Chemical Company plant that could be felt and heard up to 25 miles away. All people living within a mile north of that plant were advised to stay inside their homes, but they were not ordered to evacuate.

PRIME LOCATION

Deer Park has a total area of 10.4 square miles, all of it land, and it is bound by the cities of Pasadena and La Porte to the east, south, and west, and by the Houston Ship Channel (which is the dredged-out Buffalo Bayou) to the north.

As of the 2000 census, there were 28,520 people, with 9,615 households, and 7,941 families living in the city. Population density is 2,752.7 people per square mile, with 9,921 housing units at average density of 957.6 per square mile. The city is 90.01% White, 1.31% African American, 0.41% Native American, 1.13% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, 5.25% other, in racial make-up. Hispanic or Latino are 15.22% of the population. The median household income in Deer Park is $61,334.

QUALITY OF LIFE

The Deer Park has a Post Office at 200 East San Augustine Street, and most children attend schools in Deer Park Independent School District, with some attending school in the La Porte Independent School District. Many students residing within La Porte ISD choose to go to school in Deer Park because of higher Texas Education Agency ratings. The college serving Deer Park is the San Jacinto College District, Central Campus. The public library is the Deer Park Library at 3009 Center Street. Notable residents are Andy Pettitte, MLB pitcher for the New York Yankees, and Chelsi Smith, former Miss USA and Miss Universe 1995.
