First Time Coming to Conroe, Texas – Did You Know?

YESTERDAY

Northern born, Union Cavalry officer Isaac Conroe is the Houston lumberman for whom the town is named. In 1881, Conroe began the town sawmill there, and it was the lumber and oil industries that brought wealth to the town. It was the piney wood forest of the area supplying the lumber demands that drew residents in the late 19th century.

Oil profits in the 1930s had the city boasting more millionaires per capita than any other city in the country for a short time. Elvis Presley once performed on the High School football field in 1955. Construction of Interstate 45 allowed some of the Houston population to begin to settle communities around Conroe. From 2004 to 2007, Conroe became a hotbed of new home construction.

TODAY

Conroe is the Montgomery County seat and is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area, located about 40 miles north of Houston. The population leaped from 36,811 in 2000, to 61,533 in 2012. Exxon, in 1980, was about to consolidate its current employee base to a site in Conroe, until the plan was thwarted by collapse of the local oil-based economy. The City’s 2012 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report cites top employers as Conroe Independent School District, Montgomery County, Conroe Regional Medical Center, National Oilwell Varco-Reed Hycalog, and the City of Conroe.

PRIME LOCATION

The United States Census Bureau states the city has a total area of 37.9 square miles, with 37.8 square miles of it land, and 0.1 square miles of it water. The population density is 1066.2 people per square mile, with 56,207 people, 18,651 households, and 13,086 families living in the city. The 22,215 housing units are at an average density of 412.5 per square mile, and the racial makeup of the city 69.7% White, 10.3% African American, 1.2% Native American, 1.8% Asian, under 0.05% Pacific Islander, 13.7% other races. Hispanic or Latino people make up 38.5% of the population. Median household income in Conroe is $34,123.

QUALITY OF LIFE

Conroe sits seven miles southeast of Lake Conroe, a popular lake with numerous year round water and cultural events. The city has many parks, with the most notable being Candy Cane Park, where the Heritage Museum of Montgomery County is found. They city is connected with 40 mile away Houston by Interstate 45, and Dallas, 200 miles away. General aviation services to Conroe are provided by Lone Star Executive Airport, and there is a small Greyhound Bus Lines station in operation. Some notable residents are Colin Edwards, Two-time World Superbike champion and current MotoGP rider, Rock Cartwright, NFL Runningback for the San Francisco 49ers, and Kevin Slowey, starting pitcher for the MLB’s Minnesota Twins.
